NASCAR, the Military and Your Tax Dollar

NASCAR'S Front Row Joe Nemechck now has a new nickname and it's "G.I Joe." You can sit in front of your TV on Most Sunday afternoons and watch these high priced cars turn in a left circle for approximately 4 hours, burning fuel and rubber as if it were $1 a gallon and retreads from Sears. All of this, at only a cost of a little under $10 Million Dollars to you "Average Joe & Jane Taxpayer. Not to be outdone, The National Guard also sponsors a Nextel Cup Car and the Marines have followed suit to the tune of $3.5 million for a Busch Series Car in 2005. Bringing up the Rear (admiral), the Navy just signed with Dale Earnhardt and JR Enterprises to sponsor a fulltime Busch Series Car beginning in 2006.

Money well spent? Who knows, given that over $40 million of the US Army's $212 Million 2004 Recruiting budget went to "Sports" and they are still falling short of the Army's Recruiting Goals.

Just what other Sports do we the Taxpayer support with these free spending Military "Recruitment" dollars? Not to be outdone, the Marines also sponsor to the tune of $100, 00 per year, a Professional Snowmobile Racing Team. Don't like the snow & cold..well fear not, the Army spends more than 10 times that amount on the Professional Rodeo Circuit and even sponsors a Professional Bull Riding Team. No BullS...here.

I wondered why, living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I hadn't encountered any individuals or organizations up here sponsored by our Military. It seems to me, this would be fertile ground for recruitment as we have over 7% unemployment and just about every kid from the age of 10 on up knows how to handle a firearm because almost everyone learns how to hunt & fish before they can legally drive.

What about folks like Tiger Woods or other Professional Golfers..wouldn't that be a great place to recruit potential fledging GI Joes? Missouri Rep. Ike Skelton, the ranking (2004) Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said the NASCAR, Rodeo and Snowmobile sponsorships are "absolutely" appropriate for the military. "It's a matter of striking a responsive chord," Skelton said. "You will not find them at golf tournaments." Just what does he mean by "Them"....

Gentlemen..start..your..engines...your tax dollars are being well spent at 200mph plus.
